Abstract: The purpose behind the study was to investigate the effect of training on employee performance in public sector organizations in Addis Ababa: The Case of Attorney General of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. Training is a planned process to enrich attitudes, knowledge or skills and behavior through learning experience to achieve effective performance. The study was done based on primary and secondary data sources. The objectives of the study were: to assess the roles of training and its relationship with employees’ performance, to evaluate whether the training programs have had impact on employee performance, assess the effect of the training programs in enhancing knowledge, skills and performance, and to examine if the training programs are systematically designed and implemented accordingly. Data was obtained through questionnaires distributed to employees with a target population of 172 staffs, and an interview schedule guide for 20 managers and team leaders of Attorney General of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. Data analysis was done through descriptive statistics. The study identified that though Attorney General of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia provides trainings for its staff, the trainings given are unplanned and not systematically designed. The study recommends that: Attorney General of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia should conduct Training Needs Assessment in all departments; management should provide balanced and planned training opportunities for staff in order to keep them updated, and improve their knowledge and skills. In addition, the organization should create an environment where the trainings bring about better performance.
