Abstract: | The purpose of this study is assessing the challenges and practices of succession planning and management in Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, which has been the pioneer to implement the program in the banking sector. The study used primary and secondary data. Cross sectional survey has been used to collect primary data from 92 employees at the management level in the first and second pool of candidates and interviews was conducted with 5 top managers from the Human Resource Division who are directly related in executing the program. Descriptive analysis has been done to assess the challenges and practices. The collected data was analyzed using SPSS version 20. The study identified that the succession planning and management program of the CBE has been entrapped by challenges like lack of identifying talent at the lower level, biases in the selection of candidates, inability to run computer programs meant to track progress and processes, information gaps, low visibility etc. Having these challenges, the CBE although struggling to spine the program considering SP&M strategic tool to achieve its business imperative, but the system still is hung up on the planning continuum of succession |
