Critical Discourse Analysis of Media Presupposition in Reinforcing Ideology: The Case of Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia

Title: Critical Discourse Analysis of Media Presupposition in Reinforcing Ideology: The Case of Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia
Authors: Abebe, Yirgalem
Abstract: The aim of this study is to uncover how a particular kind of institution is reinforcing
its ideology through journalist’s fair or unfair presupposition of information/
knowledge, which is done by using Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia as its case. To this end,
the study reveals the possible ideological goal does such presupposition attempt to
achieve. The study focuses on a set of media discourses regarding the role and contribution
of the hospital in curing obstetric fistula patients. In order to realize the
stated objectives, the study adheres critical discourse analysis as the main methodological
tool, Van Dijk socio-cognitive theory, presupposition and relevance theory,
and theory of privacy as the theoretical frameworks. The analysis indicates that
there is a consciously or unconsciously unfair presupposition of journalists which
might lead audiences to invest in too much processing effort for the amount of cognitive
effect they wish to achieve so that the institution would underpin its ideology.

The Contributions of Exports of Some Minerals to the Ethiopian Economy

Title: The Contributions of Exports of Some Minerals to the Ethiopian Economy
Authors: Dejene, Meron
Abstract: An assessment on the contribution of exports of some mineral resources to Ethiopia’s
economy was carried out for the period 1994/95 – 2013/14. The study employed
the testing of the long run and short run relationship and causality between
exporting mineral resources and economic growth by including another macroeconomic
variable, i.e., popular time series econometric techniques of co-integration,
Vector error correction estimation and Granger causality test. The results from unit
root test and co-integration have shown the existence of long-run relations and volatility
among the variables, indicating that the export of minerals has not been
constant as it fluctuates from year to year. The Granger causality test had indicated
that in the short-run there was no causality among variables, but in the long-run,
there was bi-directional causality among the five variables, namely, GDP, Export
of Opal, Export of Tantalum, Export of Gold and Exchange Rate. The key finding in
this study is that export of major minerals had positively and significantly affected
economic growth in Ethiopia, and this growth had stimulated the export of minerals
in the long-run.

Factors Affecting the Adoption of Mobile Banking in Commercial Bank of Ethiopia

Title: Factors Affecting the Adoption of Mobile Banking in Commercial Bank of Ethiopia
Authors: Haile, Laekemariam
Abstract: The purpose of this study is to identify factors influencing the adoption and usage
of mobile banking as the tool for help banks understand and improve the service
in order to gather the expected benefits and can add on to the existing literature
concerning mobile banking in the Ethiopian context. From the literature, six determinant
factors are identifies. Each variable is measured using 5-point Likert-scale.
Using primary data collection method, questionnaires were distributed to target
respondents of customers of Commercial bank of Ethiopia for mobile banking users,
This study is based on The Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology
(UTAUT) model specifies the causal relationships between Performance expectancy,
Perceived risk, Perceived cost, Effort expectancy, Trust, Mobile banking service
quality and Behavioral intention items. The data were analyzed using AMOS version
23 and SPSS version 20. The findings of this study revealed that Performance expectancy,
Perceived risk, perceived cost, Effort expectancy and Trust, were the factors
affecting users having intention to adopt mobile banking. Meanwhile, the Mobile
banking service quality was found to be insignificant in this study. Furthermore,
this study also manages to present demographic variables effects toward behavioral
intention to adopt mobile banking, and found that gender is non-significant factor
for mobile banking adoption. Age and occupation is found as significant factor for
adoption of mobile banking but educational qualification was not a significant factor
for adoption of mobile banking in Ethiopian mobile banking user context.

Appraisal of Mass Media in Reporting Domestic Research Results: Ethiopian News Agency (ENA) and Walta Information Center (WIC) in Focus.

Title: Appraisal of Mass Media in Reporting Domestic Research Results: Ethiopian News Agency (ENA) and Walta Information Center (WIC) in Focus.
Authors: Addis, Asmamaw
Abstract: The aim of this research is to analyze news coverage of two wire services in Ethiopia,
namely ENA and WIC. The research also appraises the role of these news media
in relation to the contribution of local research dissemination. 340 sample news
stories are chosen for content analysis from both wire services. Systematic sampling
technique is employed to pick representative news items. The selected stories have
been covered by news media of the country. 18 key informants are also used purposively
for interview. The findings of the study have shown that the range of ENA and
WIC news coverage is diverse and wide, but the proportion given to issues in news
coverage is imbalanced. Educational, health, agricultural and science and technology,
for example, are local topics that have got very little news recognition and
attention. The coverage of local and foreign research findings of ENA is almost the
same and equal in proportion. Whereas in the case of WIC, the coverage of foreign
research findings is quadruple than the coverage of local research findings. This
indicates local research findings have got little attention and recognition in the news
coverage. It shows journalists’ engagement in reporting and popularizing local research
findings is very low. Even, the finding from the news media further implied
that the researchers are less attracted by the media.
