Managing Religious Conflict under the Federal System of Ethiopia: The Case of Jimma Zone in Oromiya National Regional State

Title: Managing Religious Conflict under the Federal System of Ethiopia: The Case of Jimma Zone in Oromiya National Regional State
Authors: G/Egziabher, Solomon
Abstract: The FDRE Constitution incorporates fundamental rights, freedom of religion and
adopts secular form of government. As a result, believers of different faiths exercise
these rights freely for the first time in Ethiopian history. However, these efforts do
not bring religious peace and tolerance as expected. Thus, the presumed positive
correlation between secularism and sustainable inter-religious relations in Ethiopia
remains problematic. This paper attempts to look into the federal system of Ethiopia
and its capacity to manage religious conflicts. It tries to search for the causes of
religious conflicts in Jimma Zone of Oromiya National Regional State where the
problem is serious and frequent. Based on this fact, the research examines the
danger of extremism in the stability of the country, explores whether the government
organs and its officials implement the constitutionally recognized religious rights
and investigates whether the federal system is effective to prevent or mitigate
religious related conflicts. The design of the study is based on the qualitative
methodology. Information is gathered using primary and secondary data. The study
aims at collecting available sources of information from the informants through
interview and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs). Unstructured interview is
employed. Books, Journals, Reports, Internet sources, etc. are used as a secondary
data. The paper gives emphasis to the current challenges of the government in
managing religious conflict especially at the local levels of the government. Finally,
it suggests possible recommendations that will help to prevent religious conflict.

A total of 250 questionnaires were distributed and 200 questionnaires were collected and used in the study. Descriptive method of analysis together with cross tabulation (chi-square) analysis and correlation analysis were used to analyze the data collected using structured questionnaire. Additionally, attempts were made to interpret the contextual facts and figures reflected by the participants come across interview sessions with service providers. The study revels that a large number of respondents were accessible to messages deliver through TV and Radio by PSI Ethiopia regarding their programs targeted to CS. However, among variety of CS products, respondents were found to be more familiar to ORS and Water Guard. From the socio-demographic factors, females/mothers seemed to have an orientation towards attitudinal change about CS programs than males, and found to be agreed on the curing capacity of CS products, their affordability, and availability across pharmacies/health clinics. However, customers could not get any of the CS products from PSI Ethiopia’s service centers.

Assessing the Application of Pricing Strategy in Audio Music CD: Empirical Study on Ethiopian Music Industry

Title: Assessing the Application of Pricing Strategy in Audio Music CD: Empirical Study on Ethiopian Music Industry
Authors: Ambachew, Fitsum
Abstract: Even if the world music CD market is at the maturity stage, Ethiopian audio music CD market is on its growth stage where the sale of audio music CD is booming from time to time leaving only some stakeholders benefit from this growing industry. This study assesses the overview of the Ethiopian audio music CD market, specifically, the kind of audio music CD pricing strategies that firms adopt and a discussion of the various factors affecting the adoption of these strategies. It is also assesses the relationship between the three key elements of the pricing decision under an integrated framework: the pricing strategies adopted by a firm, the pricing objectives that these strategies are
meant to achieve, and the pricing strategy determinants that can influence the
firm’s choice of pricing strategies for an audio music CD. For the purpose of assessing the application of pricing strategies on audio music CD, a two stage random sampling technique was applied. The first stage involves purposive sampling of recording companies, music CD distributors, vendors, artists, and promotion and marketing companies out of the total business involved directly or indirectly in the marketing of music CD marketing. In the second stage, random samplings of 20 businesses were selected. Using linear regressions and correlation analysis, the relationship between pricing strategy determinant factors and the appropriate pricing strategies were
tested. The findings reveal that there is a week relationship between the
pricing strategy adopted by firms and the factors influencing pricing strategies.

The Impact of Electoral System on Political Representation in Diversified Society: An appraisal of National Elections of Ethiopia

Title: The Impact of Electoral System on Political Representation in Diversified Society: An appraisal of National Elections of Ethiopia
Authors: Amedie, Eyob
Abstract: Since 1991, Ethiopia has conducted political elections using plurality electoral
system which is known as ‘first- past-the post’ system. The candidate or the party
which gets the highest number of votes in each electoral district is declared a
winner. In many literatures, the system is considered weak in promoting
representation as most of the votes are discarded. This thesis tried to assess the
impact of plurality electoral system on the representation of various ethnic and
linguistic groups in the political sphere. It tried to answer why the ruling party
repeatedly won national elections, why electoral reform is becoming a measure
issue in newly emerged democracies and democratic countries and it tried to answer
the link between the tendency of hegemony and electoral system. To answer these
questions the research has employed various methods, from exhaustive reading of
various literature up to conducting of interviews and data analysis to evaluate the
impact of plurality system in political representation of diversified society such as
Ethiopia. Finally, the research has concluded the plurality electoral system is not
recommended in a country like Ethiopia where more than 80 ethnic and linguistic
groups are living. In one hand, federalism is introduced to answer one of the
popular questions linked with representation in Ethiopia and in the other hand
implementing political election with exclusionary system i.e. plurality electoral
systems are paradox. This research pointed out that, as the system excludes
minorities from the political landscape, it cannot easily meat the representation of
diversity interests. The finding of this research ascertain that plurality electoral
system favors the incumbent government to win every election, had other electoral
system been employed the outcome would be different. The need to reform the
electoral system is undisputable to enhance representation of heterogeneous society,
for minority representation, for conflict management, for alternative policy and to
regulate the tendency of hegemony.
