Authors: Haile, Melaku
Abstract: Ethiopia has a variety of fruit crops growing in different agro ecological zones by small farmers, mainly as a source of income and food. The nature of the product, on the one hand, and the lack of market system, on the other, have resulted in low price for producer; and hence, low benefit for traders. This study aims at analyzing market value chains of mango in Arba Minch Zuria Woreda, Gamo Gofa, Zone with specific objectives of describing important marketing channels and actors involved in mango value chains; identifying constraints and opportunities as well as the determinants of supply of mango in the area. Three kebeles were selected based on the presence of higher amount of mango production. The data was collected from both primary and secondary sources. The primary data for this study was collected from 127 farmers and 23 traders through application of appropriate statistical procedures. To analyze the collected data, stata software was used. Multiple linear regression models were also used to analyze factors that determine mango market supply of the producers in the area. Analysis of marketing costs and margins revealed that processors (juice house) received the highest (80.89%) marketing margin and producers received less than (20%) marketing margins in mango trade business. Based on regression model, the study has identified the main determinants of mango quantity supply. Quantity of mango produced, access to market, price of mango, access to extension, access to credit and education are factors that significantly affect quantity of mango supplied to the market positively at 5%, while access to extension service affects the supply negatively at 5% level. The findings suggest that effective market information service has to be established to provide accurate and timely market information to farmers and traders on current supply of mango output, demand and prices at national and regional levels. Infrastructural development is also key to supporting the sub-sector. In this arena, emphasis should be given to improved storage, and transportation system, offering credit and other services to improve effective production and marketing of mango.

Abstract: The purpose of this research is to assess the impact of community-based health insurance on health service utilization in East Gojjam Zone, Aneded Woreda. The study attempts to: examine the major factors that help establish the scheme in this Woreda; assess client satisfaction on the services provided by the scheme; assess the overall systems of the scheme; and examine the attitudes of households towards the scheme. The researcher used cross-sectional research design and qualitative methods. The qualitative data analyzed through descriptive method of analysis that was collected through interview. The quantitative data, which was obtained through questionnaire, is analyzed in percentages, tables and frequencies. The data was collected from 30 respondents who are members of the scheme in Aneded woreda, specifically kebele 01, and Wonganflam kebele and three key informants from different offices. Finally, the researcher summarized the findings and suggested possible solutions.

Authors: Bobaso, Hirpa
Abstract: In developing countries, like Ethiopia, livestock production remains crucial and represents a major asset among resource-poor farmers. However, the economic benefit of livestock population is limited due to the prevailing livestock diseases. In Ethiopia, plant remedies are still the most important and sometimes the only sources of therapeutics for human and livestock population. The objective of this study is to document the traditional herbal livestock medicines and knowledge used by elders in the study area. The objective of the study is to identify threats of veterinary Herbal Folk Medicine in West Arsi Zone. A total of fifty four traditional healers were interviewed; and 54 medicinal plant species which are grouped into 31 families were identified in the study area. About 33 livestock ailments were treated and the most common ailments identified in the study area were bacterial and parasitic infestations. The majority of the plants were gathered from the wild and combined with those collected from home garden, based on the knowledge of local elders. The principal route of drug administration was oral followed by topical, nostrils and both oral and topical. Accordingly, medicinal plants play crucial role for the livestock owners. Yet, owners face continues threats from the environment due to timber work,
agricultural expansion, overgrazing, deterioration of oral transmission of knowledge and dose related problems. Therefore, the researcher recommends efforts to conserve medicinally important plants, minimize forest clearing and over grazing, and illegal timber works. Plants which have medicinal value should be domesticated from the forests; ethno veterinary knowledge should be documented; budget should be allocated for further scientific investigation; and special attention should be given to indigenous and seasonally available medicinal plants.

Authors: Mosu, Diress; Said, Mohammed; Abebe, Selamawit; Mohammed, Seada
Abstract: Papaya (Carica papaya L.) is a nutritious tropical fruit, consumed both in its fresh form and as a processed product world-wide. It was an important fruit in Ethiopia as it was a good source of vitamins, dietary fiber and minerals and provides flavor, aroma and texture to the pleasure of eating. The main objective of the study was to investigate the influence of ambient temperature and cool chamber (PZECC) storage conditions on ripening behavior and physico-chemical properties of packaged papaya fruits in plastic and wooden crates. The data obtained were statistically analyzed for Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) by using Complete Randomized Design (CRD). Aand mean separation was performed by using detect least significance difference (LSD) at the p 0.05 level. Results reveal that, TSS, weight loss and shelf-life significantly increased with every increments of storage period at both storage condition and packaging materials. However, mean value of firmness was significantly decreased as storage duration increased. It could be concluded that some physico-chemical properties were significantly increased with the advancement of storage time. Moreover, when post-harvest handling activity done properly the quality of papaya fruit was increased and the farmer incomes for local market and export market increased.
